Paying in store credit
Consignify can pay a consignor in your store's Shopify store credit instead of money. The credit goes to the Shopify customer the consignor is linked to, who spends it at checkout. Store credit payouts are available on the Large Shop plan.
Before you start
- Your store must use Shopify's customer accounts, not legacy customer accounts: with legacy accounts, customers can't spend store credit. To upgrade, go to Settings → Customer accounts in Shopify. On that same page, keep the Store credit toggle on (it's on by default) so customers can spend it at checkout; see Shopify's store credit help.
- In Consignify, open the Customer access section of Settings and setup, choose Allow customer access and approve it in Shopify. Consignify uses this access to link consignors to customers and to issue store credit.
- Then open Settings and setup › More › Payout methods, accept the Payment integration terms and choose Enable store credit payouts.
- Link each consignor you pay this way to their Shopify customer; see Linking a consignor to a customer.
Sending a payment
Open a saved payout and choose Pay in store credit, or choose it when you create or edit one (Send payment when the consignor can also be paid with PayPal; in that window, choose Store credit under Payment method). Shopify issues the credit right away and emails the customer about it, and the payout is marked Paid. Shopify's email only announces the credit. To also send Consignify's payout receipt, tick Email the consignor a receipt once it's paid before you send.
Giving a store credit bonus
Some shops add a bonus when a consignor takes store credit instead of money. Consignify doesn't calculate bonuses, so add the bonus to the payout as a positive adjustment (see “Adjustments and additional items” in the payout guide). The credit is the payout's total, bonus included.
Account limit
Shopify allows less than $15,000 USD of store credit on one customer account. If a payment would go over the limit, Shopify refuses it, nothing is credited, and you can pay the payout another way. See Shopify's store credit help for the current rules.
What the consignor sees
Shopify emails the customer about the credit, and the credit shows in their customer account, where they spend it at checkout. In the consignor portal and on the receipt the payout reads “Paid as store credit”. The portal never shows the linked customer.
When a payment needs review
Shopify can't tell Consignify whether a credit was already issued, so Consignify never sends one twice on its own. If Shopify's answer was unclear, the payout shows Needs review. Choose View customer in Shopify and check the customer's store credit: if a credit of the payout amount appears at or after the time the payment started, choose It was paid. If not, choose It wasn't paid and send it again.
Failed payments
When Shopify refuses a credit, for example because the linked customer no longer exists or the currency isn't supported, nothing is credited. The payout shows the reason, stays unpaid and unlocks. Fix the cause and send again.
Taking back a credit
Consignify never removes store credit. To take a credit back, debit it on the customer's page in Shopify, then choose Mark as unpaid on the payout.
